Cycling to Drayton Manor

I'm on the cusp of buying my first e-bike. (LEGAL) (insert link here)

My legs don't work as well as they once did, hence my need for buying an e-bike.

I recently discovered that it's possible to ride direct from Birmingham to DM via the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, approximately 15 miles from start to finish.

Has anyone here tried that bike ride? Is it do-able?

Next question is how safe will my bike be when I arrive?

There's a rail where bikes are chained to. Can guests use this, or is it staff only?

How safe is it?

There's CCTV, but they appear to be pointing in other directions.

Ebikes are very expensive these days, and I will need to pay for insurance. Insurance claims for theft almost always require cctv for recompense.

Is there a safer place in DM to park a bike or will this do?

Sorry for all the questions. :)

Looking at the new google street view of DM, there may be other options to chain a bike. :)

First option is right next to the Hotel.

Second option, futher down from the Hotel, there's another option to chain up. :)

Other options, but what I need to know, is it safe there? The ebike I'm going to buy will cost the best part of £3K - so I will need insurance, and wiill need CCTV to cover me if my bike is stolen. :)

Are we allowed to park bikes in the Hotel grounds?

I can well imagine that the park has a sustainable transport policy - any planning application would want to see that there is one. There must be some facilities for bikes.

I bit the bullet and bought my new bike today. Delivery due on Tuesday. :)

I can't wait. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!

However I'm not sure if visiting DM on my bike is going to be viable :(

That bike fence at the entrance is not a safe place to park a bike. It would take seconds for a bike thief + angle grinder to remove a bike from that fence. They wouldn't even target the locks, they would just cut through the fence, and it would take less than 10 seconds. :(

Other more stealthy thieves wouldn't even use a grinder - they just use pipe cutters :(

There's many vids of bikes being stolen on the internet, and just watching them makes my blood boil.

I wonder if there is any flexibilty with the peeps that run DM to allow me to park my bike somewhere safer? Maybe inside the park? Is this possible?

I know what you're all gonna say - send an email and ask!

Email to whom, tho? (please don't give the generic link) I'll just get an AI reply!

Actually, if anyone knows Victoria's email address please enlighten me. Maybe she could help?

:)

You would need to speak to Guest Services really... They'd be the only people who can advise on this. (You may see this as a "Generic reply" but this is actually the process... Same with most other parks)

Bikes, as are any other property including cars, are parked at your own risk. Everything has a riskfactor to it.

Hi all. Had the bike for almost 3 weeks now and been to DM twice (sort of) and it didn't go as well as I'd hoped. In fact it's been a complete and utter disaster! If you've got a spare 5 minutes then read on and I'll tell you all about it :)

First attempt was the weekend before last. The day started well, the sun was shining it was nice and warm, perfect cycling weather. I was having a whale of a time whizzing along the Birmingham & Fazeley canal with zero effort. I was almost near the end of the journey when it all went belly up! I slowed down and moved over to allow some walkers past and in doing so I lost my balance and scraped my hands against a thorn bush, cutting both. Dusted myself off and carried on riding and noticed that there was a large twig stuck between the front wheel and the fork. On closer inspection it was covered in thorns and was stuck in the front tyre. I pulled it out and heard a short hiss of air then silence. I thought I'd got lucky and carried on riding for a few minutes and heard a sudden loud hiss and the tyre went completely flat :( This is where I was when it happened:

1774037193574.jpg

I was about half a mile away - so close yet so far! Spent the next 10 minutes panicking until I gathered my thoughts and rememberd that there's a retail park further up the road and I thought there's bound to be a Halfords there so off I went, pushing a 26kg ebike for what turned out to be 2 miles! I stopped off for a rest at Fazeley Square and glanced over at the rear wheel and noticed I'd picked up another bloody hawthorn twig :( Pulled it out and yep, you've guessed it - another flat tyre! Anyway I continued my journey up to the retail park and eventually found a Halfords (it's right at the opposite end, literally the furthest point from the entrance!) and they fixed the punctures which cost the best part of 30 quid lol So now I was back on the road off I headed to DM, it was past 4pm by the time I arrived so I didn't even bother going in and was worried about getting home before it went dark.

1774037193540.jpg

Time to try and get home. I didn't want to go back along the canal and risk another flat so I had to ride home via the 110 bus route which was horrible :( The route involves about 4 miles down the A435 before you return to normal roads, and I had to deal with cars and huge lorries flying past at 40+mph. Once I left the A road the rest of the trip home was pretty uneventful and I eventually made it home.

So that was my first attempt. Hardly what I had in mind, but I decided it wasn't going to put me off so I spent the next few days relearning how to change a tyre and replace a tube. Let's just say it's a LOT more difficult than it used to be! I haven't owned a bike in 30 years and back in the day it was a piece of cake to fix a flat, I must have repaired hundreds of punctures without a problem when I was a kid. These days however just removing the tyre bead from the rim of the wheel is nigh on impossible without breaking both thumbs and shouting words that would make a sailor blush! I eventually managed to remove the tyre and did a few practices of replacing the tube and I thought I'd cracked it and was fairly confident that I'd be able to do it out on the road...

2nd attempt - packed all the required gear to deal with a potential puncture and off I went. The journey went well and I decided to make a slight detour by leaving the canal shortly before it all went wrong last week and went along Bodymoor Heath rd past Villa's training ground and the A4091 to DM.

I made it! No punctures. No cut hands. No wasting 30 quid. Yippeee! :) Had a quick ride around and spotted the security truck and went over to ask where the best place to lock the bike up was. The green fence next to the entrance was his reply! lol He assured me that it is covered by CCTV so that's where I parked up.

Spent a few hours in the park before heading home. Went back the way I came and rejoined the canal next to Marston Farm Hotel. Sat down on the bench for 10 minutes to catch some late afternoon sun before heading back. I think you can guess what is coming next...

1774367183417.jpg

I have no idea how this happened. I heard nothing. The tyre was fully inflated when I sat down and 10 minutes later this? How?

No need to panic - I've prepared for this, right? Well, I thought I did. It took me half an hour just to remove the bead on one side of the tyre. In theory once one side is removed the other side should be easy. However that wasn't the case. I tried everything to remove the other side but it just wouldn't budge. Now I was starting to panic - it was approaching 5pm and only about 90 minutes of daylight left. There was only one option - put the wheel back on and push the bike home. :( So that's what I did. 12 miles back to Brum. As i've mentioned in the past I have bad legs (Post Thrombotic Syndrome) so just walking that far is something I thought would be impossible let alone having to push a heavy ebike too!

90 minutes later the sun was setting:

1774367183396.jpg

I'd covered about 4 miles by this point - only 8 more to go! I had to keep stopping every 10 minutes as my legs were starting to cramp and it took me 5 hours to make it back to Brum. Five bloody hours. :(

1774367508745.jpg

I still had 3.5 miles to go to get home and by this point I could barely stand up nevermind walk or push a bike so opted to do the thing you're never meant to do with a flat. Ride it! Apparently it ruins the tyre and can break the wheel but to be honest I was past caring and I just wanted to get home and go to bed! I rode it super slowly and eventually made it home.

So there we go. Complete nightmare! 3 days later and my legs still hurt! Will I do it again? Actually YES lol

I've decided to invest in some better tyres (possibly tubeless) before my next attempt. I'll probably wait a month or so before trying again, and hopefully some kind soul will have cleared the path of those dreaded hawthorns in the meantime. :D

Fair play for not giving up. A lot of people would've called it quits and had somebody come pick them up.

If I knew anyone with a big enough car I would have given in! The bike is an XXL sized frame with 29 inch wheels so it's way too big to fit in any normal car. Time to make friends with someone with a van! :D

I bought some new tyres - Schwalbe Marathon Plus. £90 for the pair. oof. I'm starting to regret buying this bike. It's turning into a money pit. lol

Fingers crossed my next attempt to get to DM will be more successful. (y)

I had another flat day, today :( I wasn't heading towards to DM - (feel free to delete this if it's off topic.....)

I decided to go to Dudey via the canals.

I fancied some orange chips for my lunch. Not too much to ask for? I could've just spent £5.20 on a bus day ticket to get to Dudley and back, but why do that when I can Cycle for free? The Canal is just a few miles from where I live. What could possibly go wrong?

This is what happened.

1777580235880.jpg

I've rode the Canals 4 times, and have ended up with flats 3 times.

Is it time to give up?

7.5 miles was the walk home back to Harborne this time - not too bad. Not great either. :(

Am I doing something wrong, or am I just being super unlucky?

If this happens again I may just have an "accident" and chuck the bloody thing in the nearest canal and make an insurance claim...

...and use the money to fund something else to continue my mid life crisis! :p

As a very experienced cyclist, who cycles part of that canal all the time, although not to Brum, but from Tamworth, through Fazely, sometimes to DMP and usually to the Dog and Doublet near Kingsbury and back, the first two mistakes you have made is number one, not putting a puncture protection strip in between your tire and inner tube and number two, the most important, not putting slime inside your inner tube. These combined will almost completely illimitate punctures.

The protection strip helps stop things like thorns and nails from going into the inner tube, but if they do, the slime provides an air seal to stop the tube from deflating. I've cycled maybe 150 miles along the canals these last few months (many pub runs), pulled many, many thorns out my tires, but have not had a single puncture, not one. The slime is so effective that last year I pulled no less than 32 or so thorns out my inner tube that had all been sat in there, at the same time, for god knows how many months, I never checked because the tire never deflated. There is a high chance too, that if you do get a puncture and your tire does deflate, you can just pump it back up and it will hold, because the slime has sealed the puncture. The protection strips will cost you around a tenner for two, and an inner tube with slime in, for 29 wheels, will cost you about £12 each. I am surprised the lads at the Halfords you went to, didn't recommend these, they are pretty good in there usually, it's my local Halfords.

Anyway, onto DMP, that green fence is quite literally, right next to the security office, no chance of anything getting stolen from there. I've left bikes there for many, many years, no issues what so ever.

No one's going to come with an angle grinder as the security guard literally sits maybe 5 meters away from that fence, in the little hut on the left of your photo. I've left bikes there many times, not electric, but multiple thousand pound mountain bikes. Never once had a single issue.

Erm what? AI spam? I think you need to re look at what actually is spam and what AI is, and what is someone providing you with actual, real information. As your post suggests you might be slightly confused. You can even run my post through an AI checker, which will confirm if the post was written by AI or a person, I think you will be surprised, great tools for teachers by the way.

I am from the forum for many years, new account, as I lost access to my old email address, my old username is Dan_R, plenty of posts on here by me, over the years. Once I get access back to my email, I can re post on that account.

Maybe you shouldn't be cycling, because with all due respect, you come on here ranting about getting flat tires, as an experienced cyclist myself, I signed up specifically with a new account so I could give you some tips and advice. I tell you EXACTLY what you need to do to prevent your issues and you immediately write me off as being AI...to your detriment I guess pal, because I have given you some tips and solutions to your exact problem and you just shrug it off...next level ignorance. I do not mean to sound harsh here, not at all. You enjoy getting those punctures I guess 👍

Oh as we are talking about cycling, to the manor, here is my current bike, as mentioned in my previous post. Taken the other day, on the canal, not the Birmingham and Fazely canal though, the Coventry canal, which splits off at Fazely junction, near the manor.
